Chlamydia pneumoniae infects and replicates within epithelial cells, like other chlamydia, it has a biphasic life cycle with infectious elementary bodies and larger replicative reticulate bodies. The elementary body is the small, rigid spore-like infectious form, equipped with a tough cell wall.
