Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8, MMP8 and neutrophil collagenase) is a specific collagen cleaving enzyme that is present in connective tissues. Its function includes the breakdown of extracelluar matrix in normal processes (for example in reproduction, tissue re-modelling and embryonic development), often involving degrading interstitial collagens where it acts on collagen type I.
