NR1H3, also referred to as liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) serves as a detector of cholesterol levels. LXRα has control, over genes that are involved in aspects of cholesterol management, such as absorption, transport and excretion. Its expression is particularly high in tissues with cholesterol metabolism like the liver, adipose tissue, intestine and macrophages.
