What are clinical trials?
There are hundreds of medical tests and clinical trials in the UK every year. Generally clinical trials are considered to be biomedical or health-related research studies in human beings that follow a predetermined methodology. Clinical trials also include interventional and observational types of studies.
By participating in clinical trials laboratories can gain access to new research equipment and knowledge bases to help develop medical research projects. This helps in further studies and development of medical and health applications.
For more information on clinical trials visit the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.
What is required to participate in clinical trials?
There are various different types of clinical trials that have different requirements and embedives. Additionally there is inclusion/exclusion criteria which must be adhered to. These factors are based upon age, gender, type and stage of disease, previous treatment given and other medical conditions. Before joining any clinical trial the participants must adhere to the conditions outlined in the inclusion criteria.
The participant must give informed consent to participate before the trial begins. In addition to the initial requirements to participate in medical research there is also the laboratory equipment required to produce reliable and accurate results. In particular laboratory centrifuges are required to test blood and other liquids that require separation.
